![]() The quality doesn't depend on the gear, it depends entirely on you, gear just makes it more convenient to do specific tasks. ![]() In fact most movie trailers you hear are made entirely with sampled elements/instruments. With today's technology it is VERY possible to make a well produced piece of music sound like a "simphony" orchestra. That being said, having all the tools in the world isn't going to magically make you a composer, assuming you have some music theory background (this is arguably the most time consuming and must have skill to have), you have to keep in mind production skills everything from mastering the libraries you're using, to mixing, to mastering. ProTools Ultimate (~$2k) and Nuendo (~2k) are currently the industry standard workstations for game audio. There is not one piece of software that will magically make you proficient at making music, however the tools a lot of use to make a LIVING off of it easily go into the thousands of dollars. The music that comes out of it sounds abused too.) :D (And yes, I know it's notation software and that I'm abusing it. What software allows me to make music similar to these soundtracks? (But of course of lower quality since I don't have my own personal simphony orchestra, but that's fine.)Īs a hobby, I want to make "soundtracks" for stories that don't exist yet. ![]() As examples of what I mean I could give Halo, Final Fantasy XIII and Nier: Automata. Specifically, I want to make mostly orchestral stuff but with a little "spice" added in if you know what I mean. Assuming we're trying to make a soundtrack for a medium to low budget project (no actual orchestra, music made by one person in a DAW, sampling and/or MIDI), which tools should I know? Which tools are being used by the people who actually do this for a living (when they set out to do everything by themselves)? But what are my tools? That's the vital piece of information that I'm missing. I'm trying to build the skillset required to be a soundtrack composer and sound designer.
